Why stacking matters more than it sounds

Floor space is the constraint most collectors hit first. A shelving unit takes the footprint it takes whether it is half full or overflowing, and when it is full the only options are a second unit or a cull.

Stackable crates change the shape of that problem. The footprint of one crate is 14.5 inches square. Stack three and you are holding roughly 240 to 300 records in the floor space of a single crate.

How high can you stack?

Two practical limits, not a fixed number.

  • Reach. A stack you cannot flip through is a stack you stop using. Most people find three high is the point where the top crate is still comfortable to browse standing up.
  • Weight. A full crate of records is heavy. Put the fullest crates at the bottom and lighter ones on top, and keep the stack on a flat, solid floor rather than on carpet with a soft underlay.

For larger collections, two or three shorter stacks side by side beat one tall one. You get the same capacity and every crate stays reachable.

Stacking and browsing at the same time

The advantage a stack has over a wall of shelving is that a crate comes out. Lift one down, sit with it, flip through it properly and put it back. That is how record shops are organised, and it is a better browsing experience than reaching into a cube.

It also means you can group by section. Recent purchases in the top crate, the records you play constantly at eye level, the deep cuts lower down.

What makes a crate stack well

Not everything that can be stacked should be. A crate stacks well when the base sits into the rim of the one below rather than balancing on it, when the walls are rigid enough not to bow under a full load, and when the height suits a 12-inch sleeve so records are not rattling around inside an oversized box.
